Child of Fire

Harry Connolly

Date of Publication: 09/29/09

This is a new book I was given an advanced reading copy of. I'm not reading a lot of new material right now but since this is hot off the press I thought a review might be a good idea:

First time author Connolly has done a good job of "world building" with this novel. The magic system he posits is really interesting. Also the last half of the book is quite exciting.

However the first half of the book is not so exciting and I'm not sure every reader will be patient enough to wait till things heat up. The book is highly reminiscent of the Dresden Files (and indeed Jim Butcher sings the praises of Child of Fire on the cover.) Speaking of the cover it is awful-so it may not grab the eye of potential new readers.

All in all this is a good first effort but I'm glad I got an advance reading copy-I would not have been inspired to spend my hard earned dollars on it, I'm afraid.

6/10

The Amazons

Merina Valasca

2005

A study of the historical accounts and myths about the legendary warrior women.

6/10

It was interesting reading. I didn't realize before that tales of warrior women groups/tribes/nations are found all around the world, but they are. The low rating is mainly because the book was obviously not proofread--it is RIDDLED with typos! Also reuses many of the same illustrations over and over again, and not all of them have to do with the Amazons.

Well-researched subject, badly-done book. Too bad.

Woman, Thou Art Loosed!

T.D. Jakes

1993

7/10

This was interesting reading. It's like ministerial counseling, but it's not, really.

I'm reading Touch of Evil, fka Badge of Evil (they decided to rename the book after the movie to help sales). I'm having a hard time getting into it: it seems that Orson Welles completely rewrote it for the movie, only using it as a starting point for the screenplay. Seems he took an average story and made it into something memorable!

If I ever finish it, I'll let you know if I still feel the same way.
