A good episode, I like it.

He really gets what he deserves, considering that not only does he hit the kid and flee, he then stands by and lets his co-worker get busted for it! Cowardice on top of cowardice.

The eyewitness needed her eyes examined--I still don't see how she could mistake Edward Andrews' co-worker for him. They didn't look at all alike, and she got a good look at Andrews when the accident happened. huh.gif

Fun and entertaining episode. I think Andrews does a nice job of playing the slimeball. And the car does a good job of playing the car.

I didn't care for it the very first time I saw it, but after a couple more viewings it grew on me. The underlying point about the car representing his conscience was very creative. I prefer Andrews' character in 'Third From The Sun', more devious, a dirty scoundrel.

Good, engrossing episode. Top quarter for me. Watch for the continuity error when the car chases Ollie down the street. The car has a front bumper in close ups but it isn't there in the more distant shots - my favorite continuity error of the series. Love to watch for it whenever I see this one.

Or how she could mistake a ca 1947 Ford for a 1956 model. There was a big difference in those days.

Not bad.

--------------------
Anyway the SEC (Second Echelon Conference) will really be exposed if they play OSU. Too bad the Gators won't get a crack at either Michigan or USC, muchaless Ohio State. A match against Michigan would have blow-out written all over it, and is that really how you want to end your season? Much better off with a cozy matchup against the ACC or Big East champ.--MJHBUCKEYE

Actually, it's a moot point now anyway because Florida is going to get the nod. We'll see you in Glendale. My boys will be the ones with the pride stickers on their helmets blowing up the scoreboard on your boys.

OSU is going to destroy your boys, punk!--CYRIL THE THRILL

very below average ep for me. gave it a 4. May be in my all time "bottom 20" list if I ever cared to compile one. Just don't stuff w/ cars chasing people down and tormenting them by malfunctioning and all.

Before the car I'm in now, I'd driven some gawdawful clunkers in my time that were breaking down all the time. The constant repair bills and whatnot might be why I'm not too down w/ this ep...

I have been reading this forum frequenty but this is my first post. I chose Olly Pope as my name more in tribute to Edward Andrews fine performances ( he was even better as Carling in Third from the Sun). I also wanted to pay tribute to You Drive as it is an episode that has grown on me. I do enjoy Earl Hamner's episodes and I am particularly intriqued by the sound track to this episode. For the most part it seems unique and really sets an eerie tone. It strikes me as nightmarish almost. Oh well I look forward to future posts and exchanges.

I am particularly intrigued by the sound track to this episode. For the most part it seems unique and really sets an eerie tone.

Give credit to Jerry Goldsmith. For the most part you're hearing his scores for "Nervous Man in a $4 Room," "Back There," and "The Invaders." If you're not very familiar with these episodes, try to catch them and listen to these magnificent scores in all their glory, fulfilling the purposes for which they were written.

Welcome aboard, Olly!

I liked this episode, but to be honest I was expecting a worse fate for Olly, maybe getting a taste of his own medicine and getting hit by someone else. I was expecting the car to actually hit him, but as always The Twilight Zone did the unexpected.

But after all this is The Twilight Zone, where people are left to endure their cruel fate. Like Henry Bemis, a nice, innocent man who justs want to read. And what happens to him? He ends up as the last man on Earth, and his glasses are broken so he can't even indulge in his favorite leisure activity.

On the other band this Olly bloke hits an innocent kid and leaves him to die. I suppose Olly endured some level of psychological torture, but I wanted to see him suffer more, I suppose.

On a personal note, this episode kind of affected me on a personal level. I have experienced being on a bike and colliding with a speeding car. But the driver was a very nice guy. He made sure I was okay and all that.

Ollie obviously was affected by his action before he turned himself in. He called the hospital to check on the boy's condition. Later, when he hears from Pete Radcliffe that the boy just died, you see tears well in his eyes.

This episode presents a fascinating study on conscience, morality, and responsibility, and my only big problem with it is that, to a certain extent, I had already seen it in "A Thing About Machines." The commentary in the book of Hamner scripts makes an interesting comparison of the two episodes, noting that the merely annoying Finchley is killed by his vehicle, while the now criminal Pope is shown mercy by an automobile that could have easily run over him had it been so inclined.

Perhaps the most frightening aspect of this episode is that it makes the viewer evaluate his own morals. If you were in Pope's place, you'd like to think that you'd take the legally and morally correct action. Would you, though? Just thinking about it and actually having it happen are two drastically different cases. Likewise, I'm not sure how readily I'd rationalize that a neighbor's bomb shelter is off limits to me while I was listening to the constant wail of sirens.
